El New York City Ballet (NYCB) es una compañía de ballet fundada en 1948 por el coreógrafo George Balanchine^[1]​ y Lincoln Kirstein^[2]​. Balanchine y Jerome Robbins son considerados los coreógrafos fundadores de la compañía. Léon Barzin fue el primer director musical de la compañía. El Ballet surgió de compañías anteriores: la Producing Company of the School of American Ballet,^[3]​ 1934; el American Ballet,^[4]​ 1935, y el Ballet Caravan, 1936, que se fusionó en la American Ballet Caravan,^[5]​ 1941; y directamente de la Ballet Society,^[6]​^[7]​ en 1946.
